Case Study: Faux Doubt - A Vibrant Journey through 90s Nostalgia


Client Overview:
Faux Doubt, a No Doubt cover band hailing from Guelph, Ontario, reached out in the summer of 2023 seeking a dynamic brand identity. The project involved crafting a logo, business cards, and a range of merchandise for their live performances. The band envisioned an edgy, colorful, and cool design, capturing the essence of the retro 90s vibe.


Navigating Design Evolution:
The initial design concepts presented were met with constructive feedback from the band, expressing a desire for less edginess and a more vibrant, colorful approach. Acknowledging their input, I revisited the drawing board, eventually landing on the distinctive "ransom note" style that perfectly encapsulated the retro 90s feel they were aiming for. After a few color tweaks, the Faux Doubt logo was born.


Building a Grungey Aesthetic:
The logo served as the cornerstone for the band's branding aesthetic. I extended this vibe by creating a purple and hot pink, grunge-inspired acrylic paint background, setting the canvas for their business cards, apparel, and social media assets. This cohesive visual language has become a hallmark of their brand.


Unique Merchandise Creation:

Responding to the band's request for standout merchandise, I embarked on the creation of guitar picks—an unconventional promotional item. Facing uncertainty locally, I reached out to a supplier in China who swiftly delivered the unique guitar picks before the band's upcoming gig. In addition, custom buttons, stickers, and personalized candy rolls were crafted for effective promotional giveaways.


Ongoing Satisfaction and Future Collaborations:

The Faux Doubt band has expressed full satisfaction with the branding, ensuring a continuing collaboration. The success of the initial project has led to additional ventures, including branding for their second cover band. The enduring partnership exemplifies the harmonious blend of creativity and client vision, resulting in a vibrant and memorable brand identity that resonates with fans and continues to evolve.
